Cold-forged aluminum spool Cold forging aluminum is a superior technology compared to traditional casting. Parts made through cold forging are stiffer and lighter than cast parts because their molecular structure is different. Shimano factories use cold forging for making gears and spools, among other components.
AR-C spool One of Shimano’s patents involves the design of the front edge of the AR-C spool. This design allows the line to leave the spool almost directly towards the first guide when casting, minimizing friction at the nearest guide and eliminating the need for oversized guides.
Bearings Shimano’s Roller Bearing special bearing provides solid alignment of the reel’s axle. Replacing this bearing would require 3-4 traditional ball bearings. This is why Shimano reels should be compared to other brands that include 3-4 more ball bearings.
S-SS bearings S A-RB bearings are made of stainless steel. The S-type bearing is sealed, meaning both ends are protected with either metal or rubber shields to prevent dirt and contaminants from entering the bearing.
